Learning to Be a Man

Taking inspiration from Prophet Yusuf alayhis-salam

Surah Yusuf is the ultimate coming-of-age story. The young boy Yusuf is cast away from his family into a home that would test his resolve and honor. He would face tests that would threaten his life, honor, and chastity. Through these trials, he would emerge as a leader and role model for centuries after him.

This surah provides essential guidance for young men on their own life journeys into adulthood. It teaches them the meaning of family, of patience, of resilience in the face of adversity. It illustrates the pitfalls of following one's desires and provides a role model for young people struggling to hold firm to their convictions in the face of temptation.

Ultimately, Yusuf (alayhis-salam) emerged from his struggles victorious. He reached the peak of his life as a leader in society with his family at his side. All along his journey, he demonstrated the utmost courage, leadership, and wisdom. His life story provides numerous lessons for our youth that they can apply to their own lives.

What do we want our young men to gain from this class?

  • We want them to feel encouraged and empowered in times of trials
  • We want them to learn that growing up is a process that will test us, stretch us to our limits, and demand maturity and strength
  • We want them to understand that even the Prophets faced situations that were tempting, but they were able to emerge from those tests through taqwa and sabr.
  • We want them to see what faith looks like in action.
  • We want them to learn to love this surah and love this Prophet of Allah.

Guidance for Trying Times

Surah Yusuf contains essential lessons for the tests that young people face in our times. It speaks of family issues, temptations of men and women, and the role of power and responsibility. This surah is especially important for boys as they learn to navigate life's challenges on the way to manhood. Like Yusuf (alayhis-salam), they will be faced with situations in which they will be pressured to say or do the wrong thing. Like Yusuf (alayhis-salam), they will be called upon to be upright leaders. Through this surah, they will learn how to navigate these issues and hold fast to their faith.

Developing Qur'anic Literacy

Students will work with the original Arabic along with the English translation to develop a relationship with the surah. They will learn to understand common phrases from the Arabic to develop a sense of Qur'anic literacy.
